His father Walter Smith was a computer market researcher, and her mother Lora was therapy. Courtney's parents separated in the year seven. Courtney had a relationship between each of them at different phases. Jennifer, her younger sister, is also an advertising executive. She was a student at Menlo-Atherton High school located in Atherton California. She graduated from Tamalpais High School in Mill Valley California in 1985. She has also appeared with Ensemble Theater Company Mill Valley when she was an high school student.
